Brief Job Description:

  • SOCAR Upstream Management International (SUMİ) is seeking an experienced and highly driven Asset Manager to join its Overseas &New Assets team. The role carries full accountability for the end-to-end management of SOCAR’s participating interests in international upstream oil & gas assets, ensuring value delivery, strong governance, and alignment across technical, commercial, and financial dimensions. The successful candidate will act as the single focal point for asset management, interfacing with Operators, partners, and internal stakeholders, while driving performance, strategic alignment, and high-quality executive reporting with the ultimate goal of value generation from the Asset.

Job duties:

  • Be responsible and accountable for 360-degree management of the Asset (SOCAR’s share in upstream oil & gas fields). 
  • Manage and guide the Asset Coordinator, ensuring effective day-to-day asset support. 
  • Report directly to the Asset Director and get their guidance and steering on the decisions taken in the context of the overall Overseas portfolio and higher management expectations.
  • Ensure timely and high-quality delivery of all functional inputs (Technical, Commercial, Finance, PSCM, Legal, etc.) related to the Asset. 
  • Maintain full alignment across internal stakeholders to achieve the Asset’s strategic objectives and Business Plan. 
  • Lead development and continuous update of the Asset Business Plan, including coordination of economic modelling inputs (EE&A). 
  • Participate in all Operator and partner meetings, ensuring proper representation of SOCAR and involvement of relevant functions. 
  • Prepare or ensure preparation of clear, structured reports following key meetings, highlighting decisions, risks, and actions. 
  • Lead preparation (or coordinate) of Service Notes, Memos, and executive materials for senior SOCAR management in Azerbaijani and English. 
  • Represent SOCAR in governance forums (Technical, Finance, Management Committees, Operating Committees etc), ensuring clear and aligned positions. 
  • Review and reasonably challenge Operator proposals (technical, commercial, and economic) to safeguard SOCAR interests. 
  • Ensure compliance with PSA/JOA (or other equivalent legal framework documents) rights, obligations, including approvals, voting, and formal communications.
  • Lead internal review and alignment on Asset AWP&B provided by the Operating Company and long-term plans prior to approvals. 
  • Monitor asset performance pre-emptively and pro-actively (production, costs (CAPEX/OPEX), milestones, forecasts etc) and ensure timely corrective actions if and where required. 
  • Identify and manage key risks (in concert with the Risk Manager), ensuring mitigation strategies are developed and tracked systematically with defined frequency. 
  • Oversee major project delivery within the asset, ensuring alignment with schedule, cost, end-product/goal and technical expectations. 
  • Act as the single integration point for all asset-related matters within SOCAR Upstream MI. 
  • Provide regular executive reporting (weekly/monthly/quarterly/ad-hoc) to Asset Director and other Senior Management. 
  • Support technical investigations, incident reviews, and claims/disputes from a shareholder perspective. 
  • Drive value optimization initiatives, including production enhancement and cost efficiency. 
  • Support and lead the process of evaluation and integration of new assets, including due diligence and onboarding organization and delivery. 
  • Maintain structured stakeholder engagement and communication plan with Operators, partners, regulators and others relevant parties. 
  • Ensure proper tracking and closure of actions arising from meetings and decisions. 
  • Contribute to continuous improvement of asset management processes, tools (including automation and other legally acceptable software facilitation), and governance frameworks.

Essential experience and job requirements: 

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree either in Petroleum Engineering, or Geoscience, or Energy Economics, or Management, or other related discipline. 
  • 5–12+ years of relevant experience in upstream oil & gas or related area
  • Proven experience in asset management, operator interface, or project management roles is a strong advantage 
  • Experience in international assets / joint venture environments is highly preferred
  • Advanced proficiency in MS Excel, MS Word, MS Lists and MS PowerPoint 
  • Experience with data visualization tools (e.g., Power BI) is an advantage/requirement 
  • Familiarity with economic modelling principles and tools is a strong advantage
  • Advanced level of English & Azerbaijani
  • Knowledge of additional languages (e.g., Russian, German, Arab, French etc) is an advantage 

Technical & Commercial Competence 

  • Strong understanding of field development, production systems ,and asset lifecycle is a strong advantage. 
  • Solid knowledge of upstream economics (NPV, IRR, sensitivities) is a strong advantage. 
  • Familiarity with PSA /JOA frameworks and governance processes is a strong advantage.
  • Experience in commercial, cost engineering, and/or economic modelling (mid- to large-scale projects) is a strong advantage 
  • Technical exposure (subsurface, wells, facilities, production) is an advantage 
  • Ability to critically assess and challenge Operator proposals is a strong advantage

Projects & Business Development 

  • Experience in project management (minimum mid-scale projects) is a strong advantage
  • Oil & Gas Business Development experience (≥5 years) is highly preferable 
  • Ability to integrate technical, commercial, legal and strategic perspectives in decision-making is an invaluable advantage
